Odd. I swear I've had this conversation before. Usually on the lines of
"There are some publications that will NOT publish names that are known to the
public if they are intended to be new names -- normally because they AREN'T new
names at that point." Which is usually why some publication venues such as
_Nature_ and _Science_ hold embargoes on taxonomic papers, and publication
becomes endangered when the name is leaked. Certainly some publications are
less inclined to be so strict and tight on their priority towards published
names, but really, what IS the harm? I do also beleive I brought up the subject
of raising the public interest in thesis names for this very reason, but that
tends to be put to the wayside, and now people are complaining that the thesis
name wasn't used. How ironic. Of course, I do not known Ryan's ACTUAL reason
for changing the name, and it is a pity the thesis name was not used, but _JoP_
may have pushed him on this, or he felt he had a better idea.
