It goes without saying that the ICZN mandates the deletion of the hyphen.
I'm not excusing this practice, but ornithology has a long history of
hyphenated taxon names (e.g., Laro-Limicolae).
Hm. I'm not saying it's a great idea, either, but it would be one way
to differentiate coordinated groups (Laro-Limicolae = 'gulls and
sandpipers') from compounds (Larolimicolae = 'gull-sandpipers' =
'gull-like sandpipers')
