latest pal afr. - new theropod

hi everyone,

Our institute has finally put out the memorial volume for James Kitching who
sadly died in late 2003. It includes the following dinosaur papers.

Raath, M.A. and Yates, A.M. 2006 (for 2005). Preliminary report of a large
theropod dinosaur trackway in Clarens Formation sandstone (Early Jurassic) in
the Paul Roux district, northeastern Free State, South Africa. Palaeontologia
africana 41, 101-104.

Pretty much does what it says on the box.

Yates, A.M. 2006 (for 2005). A new theropod dinosaur from the Early Jurassic of
South Africa and its implications for the early evolution of theropods.
Palaeontologia africana 41, 105-122.

Abstract. A new theropod, Dracovenator regenti, from the upper Elliot Formation
is described, based upon a fragmentary skull. It can be diagnosed on the basis
of a bilobed fossa on the lateral surface of the premaxilla that is connected
to the alveolar margin by a narrow channel, the presence of a deep, oblique,
lateral notch on the articular and hypertrophied dorsal processes on the
articular. Other aspects of its morphology display a mosaic of coelophysoid and
advanced theropod characteristics. A cladistic analysis of basal Theropoda,
including the new taxon finds that the new taxon is closely related to
Dilophosaurus wetherilli and Zupaysaurus rougieri although the clade formed by
these three taxa is not robustly supported. It also finds that Coelophysoidea
sensu lato is paraphyletic with respect to Ceratosauria + Tetanurae but that
this topology is not a significantly better explanation of the data than an
inclusive, monophyletic Coelophysoidea.

Barrett, P.M. and Yates, A.M. 2006 (for 2005). New information on the palate
and lower jaw of Massospondylus (Dinosauria: Sauropodomorpha). Palaeontologia
africana 41, 123-130.

This paper 'mops up' some of the details of the cranial anatomy of Masso. that
Sues et al. could not see with the specimens they were working from. Based on
the flat skull figured in Cooper 1981 and photographed in Dave Norman's
illustrated encyclopaedia.

Although this volume has only just come back from the press, it bears the date
of December 2005 (when it was originally intended for publication). This is
going to present all sorts of referencing problems.

Before anyone asks, no I don't have reprints or pdfs yet.

cheers
