Ahem, yes _Irwin_, not any other alternative spelling.

When I saw Phil's email, I googled "Erwin" and found hundreds of hits, and
figured it must be right... a valuable lesson (beyond Irwin fans can't
spell).

TV tonight here is dominated by stories and interviews with him.

And cockatoos - yes, very vicious - and ex of mine had a pet one, it wanted
me dead I'm sure of it. Incredibly destructive when they put their minds to
it. Like a pair of pliers/pincer (capable of chewing up a wooden broomstick)
with wings and enough intelligence and mischievousness to make it something
to really worry about in a pet. It would sit there in the corner, and you
could see in its eye it was calculating my demise...

And, yes I think the "danger" side of things was exaggerated on TV, he grew
up with the critters and knew how most of them would react - though I
wondered when he expanded to other things like lions, komodo dragons and
spitting cobras etc... The reports are saying this was an unprovoked attack
from the stingray...

My mistake. I meant to post that to the list:

It's spelled Irwin, by the way...

As it happens I saw him in action with various animals. He only  
*looked* like he was taking undue risks, but he knew what he was doing.
