Many of those animals without cheeks have incredibly powerful jaw muscles.
For instance, a turtle skull is essentially a (tiny) brain with a beak and
a
big bony scaffolding for jaw muscles. Likewise, extremely big jaw muscles
show up in the ceratopsian lineage well before the development of the
tooth
batteries.
Doesn't this also hold for, say, rodents?
As for "nodosaurid" cheek armor -- this was already presented as textbook
wisdom (and illustrated) in 1983, in David Lambert's A Field Guide to the
Dinosaurs. (Don't ask me how published it was before then.)
