More like the term is in the process of being abolished. It still has
a strong tradition, even though "non-mammalian synapsid" is the
cladistically correct term. "Mammal relative" is the term I use when
explaining it to laypeople--I think it does the job nicely, and it's
shorter than both of those other, more cumbersome terms.
