Marsh and Cope during the Civil war

Good day,
as I was writing my semestral work on the american civil war 1861-1865, I was 
wondering, what were the two most important persons of american paleontology of 
the time doing, what was their sympaties and opinions etc. And also, what were 
the differencies between them (e.g. in their political opinion), as Marsh was 
10 yrs older and was in his 30' at that time, Cope just in his 20'. Just
