Re: pachycephalosaurs
From: Tetanurae@aol.com
If you have access to illustrations of actual pachycephalosaur cervical
vertebrae I think most of this list would like to see them. As far as I
know, no
pachycephalosaur necks have ever been illustrated in a publication,
eventhough
they are often illustrated as being able to lock into a straight line.
This
is entirely speculative however.
Aye. If I understand correctly, Ken Carpenter published something about
pachycephalosaur cervicals not being capable of dislocating themselves from
their natural s-shaped curve to form the alleged straight-lined battering
ram. I haven't seen the paper, unfortunately, so I am simply reiterating
what Tracy Ford said in one of his self-published booklets. Maybe Dr.
Carpenter wouldn't mind filling us all in on the details...
I think this is the ref (it isn't cited in context):
Carpenter, K. 1997. Agonistic behaviour in pachycephalosaurs
(Ornithischia: Dinosauria): a new look at head-butting behaviour.
Contributions to Geolgy, Univ. of Wyoming 32: 120-149.
