Because, unfortunately, settling for the middle-man argument doesn't raise 
much controversy and therefore doesn't bring in the funding.  These 
dichotomies we're always hearing about in science aren't a coincidence; 
they're there because pitting one side against another attracts attention 
(and money).  People don't want to hear that all paleontologists have 
finally agreed that the dinosaurs were finally wiped out by the combination 
of an asteroid, disease, sea transgression, etc.  They want to hear about 
Jack Horner and Bob Bakker duking it out at an SVP meeting over the feeding 
habits of the tyrannosaurs!  That's why this debate rages on.
