He's probably right.  Contrary to popular belief, the spotted hyena is an 
active hunter, as well as a scavenger.  Though I don't have the data at 
hand, I have heard that some hyena packs include a higher proportion of live 
prey in their diets than certain prides of lions.

(You know, the predator-versus-scavenger dichotomy in modern mammal behavior 
has just got to go!)
