Re: On Terror Birds & Teratorns
Just a thought-
You might all consider emailing Bob Chandler at bchand@gcsu.edu when you
wonder outloud about "Terror BIrds" since he IS "Dr. terror Bird"..... I'm
sure he'd have some interesting input to you q uestions. He'd be delighted
to know we do on occasion talk about more than neonatal birds.....

You may be thinking of an article by Jon Baskin (JVP, 1995, 15(4):
842-844) in which he reports on a right pedal phalanx of Titanis walleri
from sediment that >could< be anywhere from early Pliocene to late
Pleistocene. Material from those two periods were mixed together at the
site, although he does report that the preservation of the Titanis
material is similar to the preservation of the Bison and other late
Pleistocene faunal material found at that site and unlike the more darkly
stained and permineralized Pliocene horse material mixed
in. Inconclusive, at best, however. The more firmly dated Titanis
material includes the material reported by Robert Chandler (Bulletin of
the Florida Museum of Natural History, v 36, no 6, 1994)---which was
dated, as I recall, at a couple million years.
Hope that helps,
PTN
