Actually untrue... it's the distal end of the femur that's bent relative 
to the rest of the shaft. The angle between most of the femoral shaft and 
the tibial shaft is < 180°, while the angle between the distal end of the 
femur and the tibia is not. 
 
Looks like I'd better actually read the paper! Still haven't found time to 
do so. :-]
