did mosasaurs echolocate?
A new paper has been released:
P.T. Madsen, M. Wahlberg, Bertel Mohl, 2002. Male
sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) acoustics in
high-latitude habitat: implications for echolocation
and communication. Behavioral Ecology & Sociobiology
53(1):31-41
Has anyone examined the skull structures of all known
mosasaurs to ascertain if there is evidence for
echolocation-like capabilities? As these were,
presumably, migratory predators (they did not,
needless to say, throw themselves in the air like
elongate phallic symbols for human "entertainment" in
prison tanks), echolocation and other sensory
apparatus would have been feasible, especially in high-latitudes.
