err... not always, their diversity is amazing today. Some are saprophytic,
others parasites or symbiotic; some prefer deep and damp forests, others
sunny places or even deserts. I can imagine their diversity was already big
during the Mezozoic. But how many clades became extinct at the K/T boundary?
IMHO we'll never know. Except small mushrooms in amber, diagnostic features
of mushrooms usually don't fossilize AFAIK, that's why it's very risky to
draw fungi in dinosaur scenes (I dometimes did, but I alvays say they're
speculative).
