I cannot say for the natural history museum world, but in the science/
technology museum world, we have groups of museums cooperating to build
travelling exhibits that are then shared with each participating museum before
the constructing museum owns said exhibit. It's been a great way for us to
share different ideas and styles with other museums, and it gives us greater
flexibility in topics we can use.
