Someone with more knowledge than I please pipe in here, but are the laws in Canada not similar? As I understand it, in Canada, all fossils (or vertebrates, at least), are considered the property of the government, regardless of whether they come from private or public land. The government, however, acknowledges that since it cannot possibly collect and reposit every single fossil, allows fossils from private land to be held by the land owner until such time that it need be reclaimed for the public trust (i.e., turned over to a museum, etc. for study)...?
