Actually, monotremes and marsupials aren't as different as was once thought.
Marsupial young start off as a sort of shelless egg, which eventually "hatches"
and the "yolk" attaches itself to the uterus wall to act as a type of placenta
equivalent. Besides, doesn't the word marsupial come from a Greek or Latin word
for pouch? Monotremes also have pouches (although I'm not exactly certain if
platypodes do - either they don't feed themselves when they have pouch young, or
the little'ns can hold their breath for a REALLY long time).
