Self-publication is a perfectly valid method of publishing scientific papers.
But if a published taxonomic name appears without satisfying the numerous
criteria for scientific validity (e.g., a new genus needs a designated type
species, a new species needs a designated type specimen, etc.), it remains
only a published vernacular name rather than a published scientific name. As
such, it cannot preoccupy a subsequent scientific use of itself, and it need
not even be used when and if its scientific description is published.
