More infos of sensation
Hello,
one of my sources was a text of dpa (german-press-agency) from August 27th.
Please excuse eventually translation mistakes.
"Hobby-paleontologists discovered unknown carnivorous dinosaur in Bavaria"
Two Hobby-fossil-collectors discovered a so far unknown bipedal Theropod in
Schamhaupten/Bavaria. At Monday (26th of July) the news of the worldwide unique
dinosaur-species was presented at the "Jura-Museum" in Eichstätt/Bavaria to the
public. Experts speak of a "sensation". Günter Viohl said that the fossil was
part of a stone-layer, which is older than 150 million years. So the dinosaur
would be older than the famous bird Archaeopteryx, of which several specimens
were found in the same region. "Most paleontologists believe that birds evolved
out of a group of small theropods", said Viohl. Scientists expect new
informations about the evolution of birds. The exact examination will last
several years. The prepared skull of the young specimen is 8 cms long. "I think
that the complete animal had the size of a turkey", said Viohl. "We don't know
how big the adult animals were." The pores in the bones show that the found is
a
young specimen. It has extraordinary big teeth. "Their crowns are serrated on
one side, what is a sign for their flesh-eating nature", Viohl continued. Their
prey were probably bigger vertebrates. The dinosaur was found in the summer of
1998. "This dinosaur-species is so far completely unknown", said Hans Weiss at
the press-conference in Eichstätt. After the scientiffically examination the
animal will get a name, which include the name "Weiss" in some form. The
director of the museum Viohl spoke of a found, "which will be remarked in the
whole world". Its value can not be estimated. In the first moment the
discoverers didn't know which treasure they've found. In a layer, which was
harder than steal the fossil-hunters found a plate, in which you could see a
skull and a neck of some sort of reptile. After the preparation of Pino Völkl
was clear: The brothers Weiss had found a new Theropod. The preparation will
last one or two years. The public is allowed to see the specimen in September
2001.
Hope this helps. Once more I've to say that a friend of mine who knows the
Weiss-brothers said that you can clearly see feathers on the neck of the
animal.
Once more, please excuse my English,
Greetings,
Thomas Hammann (Germany)
