sensation in Germany
Message from Thomas Hammann (Germany)
Hi all,
I don't know if the list members are already informed about the sensation from
last week. If not, please note that the following is NO joke!
In a press conference at the "Jura-Museum" in Bavaria/Germany Günter Viohl, the
director of the museum, spoke of a new discovered theropod-species found in
older layers than Archaeopterxy! The new species, which is not yet named is at
least one million years older than Archaeopteryx and was found by
hobby-paleontologists near the sites of the Archaeopteryx-findings. The skull
of
the specimen is about 8 cms in length and belongs to a young individual. The
teeth are serrated on one side and relatively large. The discoverers, two
brothers from Germany named WEISS, dug at this site for about thirty years. The
new name of the theropod will include their familiy-name. Viohl spoke of a
sensation and that the value of this fossil is enormous. It seems to be a
"missing-link" in bird evolution! The specimen will be shown to the public in
the year 2001. Till than german scientist examine the fossil.
A friend of mine who knows the WEISS brothers also said that you can see
clearly
feather-impressions at the neck of the dinosaur! If someone is interested I
could translate the full press-release into English.
Nice greetings,
Thomas Hammann
