Small item in the 4/24 Science News.
Two groups claim evidence that the Indonesian coelacanth is actually
a new species.
The first group was the Jakarta branch of the French Scientific
Research Institute for development. Working with mtDNA, they say
the Indonesian ind is closely related to but distinct from the
African one. They ahve named it Latimeria menadoensis, reporting
in the APril Comptes Rendus de L'Academie des Sciences.
The other group was from the University of California, Berkeley,
and they also come to the conclusion the Indonesian coelacanth
is a distinct species.
