I believe the primitive number is not well determined. Acanthostega,
considered the most primitive tetrapod known, had eight digits, as did Ted
Daeschler's "fish with fingers" (see the August Earth), but all surviving
terrestrial forms have five or fewer digits. -- Jeff Hecht
