Alvarezsaurus
Having looked at the _Alvarezsaurus_ material illustrated in Bonaparte's new
book, I'm _completely baffled_ about why the AMNH crowd want to put
_Mononykus_ into Alvarezsauria. The feet are _completely different_. The
vertebrae of _Alvarezsaurus_, which are relatively elongate and have very
winglike transverse processes, look very ceratosaurian. The scapulae and
coracoids of _Mononykus_ and _Alvarezsaurus_ are as different as two theropod
scap-coracoids can be. And where's the biconvex dorsal vertebra (of
_Mononykus_) in _Alvarezsaurus_? Bonaparte classifies Alvarezsauria as a kind
of sister-group to Neoceratosauria, which seems quite correct to me.
Comments, anyone?
