With regard to the "virus did it" theories:

Granted, it would be hard for one viral pandemic to wipe out a species.

But if dozens or hundreds of types of virus, bacteria and parasites are 
introduced to an ecosystem that is not ready for them, you could push a 
lot of species below their minimum populations in a short time, as 
geologists measure it.
