It is of course true that medieval depictions of dragons were far from being
biologically accurate renditions of dinosaur fossils--though St. George is
shown slaying one small sauropod that even my four-year-old son (who knows
about 60 dinosaur species) instantly recognized with delight as
"Brachiosaurus!"  However,  it is also true that medieval depictions of
living animals were often wildly inaccurate in detail as well;  witness
Durer's rhinoceros.  And the science of anatomy was more-or-less lost between
the fall of the Roman Empire and Leonardo da Vinci.  --Merritt Clifton,
