Then there are the famous, and real,  flying fish in the Catalina Channel in
Southern California.  Pectoral fins are 65% of the body length, giving a 20
inch fish a 26 inch "wingspan".  They accelerate underwater, break the
surface and glide the length of a football field.  Spectacular!  They do this
to escape their predetors; swordfish and dolphin.  Another example of the
evolution of "flight" from an aquatic habitat.
