Carroll's Vertebrate Paleontology and Evolution is a good compendium of
vertebrate evolution, but I think the non-graduate student/professional
would get more out of Michael Benton's *Vertebrate Palaeontology*.  It's a
somewhat shorter book, but approaches the same groups and issues in a more
readable way.  In a way, it's at the same level of readability as E.H.
Colbert's textbook, although it deals with issues in a more modern context.
